How does technology evolve? (Plus a few other thoughts)?

This is just an observation: everything humanity creates seems to be a root off of emotion or the five senses. In fact, often the techniques used in ones field may cross into a similar field. Do you think technology may just be constant innovation and destruction of old techniques to fit the next society's? Another thought that came to me is that after this worldwide culture crashes, we may never see such advanced computers again. Can the world wide web truly die? And is it true that there can be a way to merge the abstract and the concrete the same way we merged artistic and technical?
