Do we have to apply for a marriage license in Alabama if we don't live there?

We live in Mississippi and we are just having a small private ceremony in Alabama. The lady at the courthouse here said that we would have to go to Alabama now and apply for a marriage license there. Is this true or does she just have to say that? I mean, is there any way around that? Please?
