Chimney soot?

A few weeks ago we got the chimmney swept ,and put the screen back on it as we weren't going to use it for a while ,Any how the day after it was cleaned ther was a lot of coal dust falling down the chimmney when i pulled off the screen there was a pigion looking at me ,that had obvioulsy fallen down after it was cleaned,so i put the cover back on and called my brother to remove it well it managed to slip out of his hands and covered my ceiling and wallpaper in soot ,we are ready to redecorate now will it be all right to just paint over the black marks it left or will we need to use something special to cover over it so that it does not show through when we paint it.
